6 REASONS WHY WOMEN SHOULD RESISTANCE TRAIN IN 2017

[Guest post by Athena Vangalis] First of all – Happy New Year gym fam! I hope that everyone had an amazing holiday season full of savory (& sweet!) food and some R&R. As we enter 2017 – I am thrilled. I am thrilled because I see that more and more women have become interested in resistance training. This not only makes me happy, but also overjoyed that females are realizing/seeing the benefits of weight training on & within their bodies. Also realizing that weight training is not going to make you – are you ready for it – the infamous word: Bulky. When I first started “working out” I was what I like to call a “cardio bunny”. It ....

    CREATING A MORE POWERFUL YOU

One of the most frequently asked questions is “How do I get more power?” or ” How do I become more powerful in my lifts?” An answer most commonly given is master your olympic lifts.
Well that is a bit easier said than done, due to olympic lifting is a sport all by themselves and may take years to master which may not be a realistic choice. Here are five choices that also require a lot of practice to master, but none the less help you, the lifter, create more power!
    1. Get stronger in the two big lifts
The Deadlift and The Squat. You will need to perform twice your body weight to be considered powerful.
    2. Plyometrics are your friend
    Practice jumps both vertical ....

    3 OVERRATED EXERCISES!

Most of us take it very personally when exercises we use in our workout programs are challenged, especially when they are lifts that we build our programs around. I am hopefully going to give you some better alternatives or choices….

    1. Bench Press
Most of us grew up answering the question “What do you bench press?” Bench press for years was the gold standard for how strong you were or what type of athlete you were. The truth is that the bench press, thought of as the big 3 in Power Lifting, often leads to injury. Truth be told the bench press is not a great choice in chest development. The risk/reward just isn’t worth it. The Incline Bench Press, Dumbbell chest ....

MEMBER OF THE MONTH – ROBERT JACOBS

So I earned “Member of the Month” recently. I’m not really sure what that means or what the criteria was for such distinction, I just knew somehow I was. But since then, it has become a little clearer. Amongst a sea of really jacked beasts in a land called Iron, there I am, Mr. MOTM, several times a week doing my thing. I don’t lift as much. I’m not as ripped. But someone or several someones noticed me. While I may not stack up to the ELH contingent (extremely large human) as far as mass, I realized what the trainers, and some of the serious, this-is-my-way-of-life types, and even a few of my breed (Average Joes) were noticing about me. It wasn’t how ....

    WHAT DO YOU TRAIN FIRST?

When you are doing both weights and cardio in the same training session, when is the best time to perform your cardiovascular conditioning? For most of us, we are trying to change our bodies look or appearance… more muscle, less fat. So it would make sense that you would strength train first. Not so fast… you have one school of thought that says do your cardio first, it will act as a large warm-up thus in theory, you will have a better strength training session. Then you have another group that says why go through your optimal blood sugar levels if you aren’t using them to lift weights. Furthermore, if the intensity level is one of a ‘warm-up’, how much ....

THE 5 WORST TYPES OF TRAINERS

    1. The Entitled “Brand New Trainer”

Years ago I had an intern come up to me on his second day of work and ask me when he was going to start training clients. Keep in mind that this kid was not even out of school nor had he been involved in any type of certification process. When I explained to him there was much to learn before I would put him with anyone, he let me know that he was going to have his degree soon, and he didn’t go to college just to work the front desk. You can guess how I handled that one! There seems to be a pattern of young people not wanting to pay their dues or willing to gain valuable gym experience by learning the little things about how a gym ....

TRAINER HIGHLIGHT: KEVIN BECKER – 2016 TEXAS STRONGEST MAN & STRONGMAN COACH

[Guest post by Athena Vangalis] When I walk through the gym doors, I have a plan. For the past 3 years, a bodybuilding split has always been set in place for my specific training; Leg day, back & shoulders, etc.. This training was always geared towards my aesthetics goal as a bikini competitor, in hopes to obtain IFBB Bikini Professional status. When I met Kevin Becker – his goals in the weight room were a bit different than that of a bikini competitor (har har har). Kevin is a personal trainer at Extreme Iron Pro Gym , he is very well known for his incredible strength, as well as a highly ranked nationally qualified strongman in 90 kilos weight class. Initially, I hired Kevin ....

    4 SECRETS TO BUILDING MUSCLE

    1. Work Hard.
Simply stated… you have to really put in the work.
And by work I don’t mean leaving reps left in the exercise. Here is an example of that…Let’s say that you are preforming a 10 rep exercise or movement. Reps 1-5 should be difficult, reps 6-8 hard, and the last 2 you can barely get them completed. So the weight should be where you can get 8, but no way you could have performed 9. To accomplish this you really need to be honest with yourself where your starting point is. Hard work is all about your attitude and work ethic.
    2. Work Smart.
This means before you get to the gym have a plan.
Have a well thought out plan on what you are training. How are ....

Where the Food Pyramid Went Wrong
We all remember the old school food pyramid from 90s–an overstuffed breadbasket at it’s base and sweets and desserts at the top–Luckily, the USDA realized how flawed this nutritional approach was. The food pyramid underemphasized the importance of lean protein in the diet, suggesting only 2-3 servings a day. Also, with pasta, cereal, bread, and rice at the base of the pyramid, people were definitely OVER EATING grains with a recommendation of 6-11 ....

LITTLE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO CREATE A BETTER WORKOUT

Little things that lead to positive results when it comes to having a successful workout or experience in the gym. Why is it that some people hit the gym with everything they have… and have very little to show for it? And others seem to get GAINZ with very little work at all? If you you pay attention to what all the “SUCCESSFUL” people are doing you will find some common techniques or attitudes:
    1. LEAVE SOCIAL MEDIA in your gym bag!

He called me “average”. All of my life I’ve been above-average. My parents told me so. My teachers told me so. I was in advanced classes in high school. I did reasonably well in college. I earned a master’s degree from a top-something school. And in sports, I was always pretty good, not always the best, but always a pretty good player and coach. I’ve been a teacher now for 25 years of my life, which I can safely argue wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t at least above-average. But there it was. My trainer called me “average”. “THE WORKOUT GUY” AND TRAINING ADVICE

Every gym has this guy. The guy who has tried EVERY WORKOUT and is a self proclaimed EXPERT. Just ask him and he will tell you, nobody knows workouts like him…. NOBODY! All workouts work…. and then they don’t. Anyway, this is what we do know. ALL WORKOUTS WORK…. and then they don’t. A lot goes into a workout, more variables then just trying hard or having a good plan. One reason why workouts fail is that the user doesn’t give the routine a fair chance or a honest amount of time. When starting a new program you really need to give it your best effort for 5 weeks

    EXTREME BY ROBERT JACOBS

(Guest post by Robert Jacobs) Comfortable. I had settled into middle age and I was comfortable, too much so for my own good. My competitive soccer playing days – club, high school, college, adult even – had faded out of view. They’ve been reduced to a few old photos and a box full of trophies in the attic. I wasn’t necessarily overweight. I was just there. Twenty plus years of teaching and coaching had taken a toll. I was used to eating on the go, usually the wrong things, and at odd times. I was also getting used to chronic lower back spasms. The occasional “workouts” were more fits and starts than actual fitness. I’m a believer that things ....

    STRENGTH MOTIVATION BY ATHENA VANGALIS

(Guest post by Athena Vangalis ) Calling all gym-goers, health nuts and athletes – I have a question, what is strength?
Let me re-phrase that: What is your definition of strength? What does it mean in your mind “to be strong”?
To define strength, in my opinion:
To be strong is to be confident in what you are doing and proceeding with the path you are on, despite your obstacles in life. To be strong is not just physical, but mental as well. Strength to me is to mentally plow through the struggles that might be happening in your life. Sometimes it’s buried in your mind, and you have to dig it up. That’s how I try to become the best ”me”. CLUSTER TRAINING
is organizing your movement patterns in the specific oder of, PUSH, PULL, CORE, QUAD/HIP. You want the exercises to be COMPOUND MOVEMENTS, as to recruit as much muscle as well as assisting muscle groups as possible. Because you are trying total body the volume won’t be crazy but it will be challenging. Another thing to ....

10 THINGS THAT REQUIRE ZERO TALENT

Personal Trainers/Strength Coaches are extremely important when it comes to creating a “TRAINING ENVIRONMENT”. So when selecting or hiring one I have added a few points which I feel makes the hiring or selection of these individuals easier.

    1. BEING ON TIME
My pet peeve and I think a lot of people share this thought, people who are consistently late DO NOT RESPECT your time. People who are also consistently late also tend to be VERY UNORGANIZED. As a client you pay a trainer for a block of time or time slot. By starting late and ending late you are now messing with someone else training time. Being on time is a reflection of your pride, work ethic and character.

You hear it and read it all the time on the internet, Bodybuilders, Powerlifters, Strongmen, and other “Muscle Personalities”, categorizing what they do as “FITNESS”, …is it?
When I hear FITNESS INDUSTRY, I think of corporate gyms like Lifetime and Equinox. I think of low cholesterol and even lower blood pressure. I think of preventive medicine through good lifestyle choices. I think of strength training and group exercise classes. This is all just my opinion, the fitness and the gym industry has some similarities, but they are not the same. Make NO mistake, the Gym Industry is all about change.

What you listen to when you are training largely has a BIG IMPACT on how well you train. In creating a positive TRAINING ENVIRONMENT music plays a big role. Here is the tough part….what motivates and fires you up, may have the complete opposite effect on someone else. I remember when listening to the trumpets of the “ROCKY”soundtrack would send off signals in your head for GO TIME! Today, most people under the age of 45 think it’s ELEVATOR MUSIC. Heavy metal gets some people ready to train when to others it gives them a headache. Rap, rock & roll, techno, you name it and some people love it and the rest hate it. So what does a gym owner do? There are different levels of clean.
    The wipe off method.
This is when you take your towel and wipe off your sweat off the equipment. Looks clean, but you have your germs as well as bacteria still on the equipment. Then there is the spray it down method.
This is when you use some form of over the counter germicide, a step in the right direction but still very incomplete and under effective. The last one is the best one, it is not as used as much because its expensive. This ....

    Rule #1.
NO cursing or use of profanity.

Case in point, on NATIONAL LEG DAY, ( I like to train legs on Monday, since that seems to be NATIONAL CHEST DAY) it drives me nuts when a gym has a LEG PRESS,HACK SQUAT and platform and SQUAT CAGE. If you belong to a gym that has a healthy membership then they should have 2 leg presses, 2 squat racks, 2 leg curl, etc.etc., you get the point.
