[Guest post by Athena Vangalis] When I walk through the gym doors, I have a plan. For the past 3 years, a bodybuilding split has always been set in place for my specific training; Leg day, back & shoulders, etc.. This training was always geared towards my aesthetics goal as a bikini competitor, in hopes to obtain IFBB Bikini Professional status.

When I met Kevin Becker – his goals in the weight room werea bit different than that of a bikini competitor (har har har). Kevin is a personal trainer at Extreme Iron Pro Gym, he is very well known for his incredible strength, as well as a highly ranked nationally qualified strongman in 90 kilos weight class. Initially, I hired Kevin to train me & build muscle in my upper body, but soon after training with him I got curious about “his world” & playground of weights. I started asking about techniques and training for what a strongman would do at a competition – fairly opposite from training for aesthetics. Strongman is a sport in which the principle is to pick up random heavy objects and move them. Essentially, you move objects close to maximum effort, and it’s scored by time, reps or maximum weight lifted. Typically the “objects” are pieces of equipment that would not be made to pick up in a normal gym setting. Logs, circus dumbbell, atlas stones, yoke… All of this was intriguing and completely new to me. Soon after, Kevin became my strongman coach, and he encouraged me to enter my first strongwoman competition last month, 2016 Texas Strongest.

With strongman coaching from Kevin, I could not have placed 3rd in my first strongwoman. Strength is so important to me, and as a bikini competitor I wanted to break the stereotype of what most probably think – bikini chicks don’t lift heavy. I am now a nationally qualified strongwoman and a nationally qualified bikini competitor, thanks to Kevin’s guidance.

Ladies and gentleman, the sport is getting more and more popular around the world. If you are at all curious about strongman, Kevin Becker is your man. Strongman requires strength, but also requires a great amount of athleticism, skill, and mental toughness. If you want to try something new or just challenge your body in a different environment as an athlete – I highly encourage you to try it out. It truly is amazing, and the community is absolutely wonderful! Also, the trend of women turning to weights doesn’t stop at crossfit or bodybuilding; strong is the new sexy – so come check it out and test your strength you have built, in the best training environment at Extreme Iron Pro Gym!
